Culture Grid

How to add

Last modified: May 25, 2010

There are a number of ways to easily and efficiently add collections information to the Culture Grid so that it can be joined and opened up to have greater reach and value.

  • Upload for large amounts of information that does not change often  (or where the ‘harvest’ method is not feasible – up to 10,000s of records)
  • Harvest for large amounts of information where records change fairly often (up to 100,000s of records)
  • Data entry for small amounts of information (10s of records)

Uploads can be made either online or using a desktop based tool and require data to be in an XML format accepted by Culture Grid e.g. item records should be in this format.

NOTE If you use the latest version of Modes this can easily export records for upload to the Culture Grid.

Harvesting uses the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) to allow item records in the appropriate format to be automatically pulled into the Culture Grid.

NOTE: Many collection and assest management systems have OAI-PMH features which can be configured to deliver records for Culture Grid, so check with your system supplier.

Collections Trust with its technical partner can also offer a low cost option to prepare data for Culture Grid.

Data entry uses a set of simple online forms to add information directly into the Culture Grid

You can also download a spreadsheet to map item records to the Culture Grid format and send it to Collections Trust for review.

Tell us about collections information you wish to add to the Culture Grid and we’ll get back to you to discuss options and next steps.
