Description: | Sunahwar Ali was a member of the Bangladesh Youth Front in the 1970s and later a community worker. Here, in conversation with Jamil Iqbal of the Swadhinata Trust, he describes some of the problems Bangladeshis experienced in the sphere of social security. Using the example of his father, who did not claim child benefit because he did not realise that it existed, he outlines how people were often unaware of the benefits that they were entitled to. This lack of awareness was combated in part by the setting up of groups such as the Asian Unemployed Outreach Project (AUOP), in which Mr Ali was involved. Such groups were also part of the Bangladeshi community's increasing self-assertiveness. | License: | http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/2.5/ | Publisher: | Bishopsgate Institute | Rights holder: | Swadhinata Trust | Subjects: | Migration and Citizenship Public services Communities Power and Politics Home and Family | Temporal: | 2006 | Source: | Bishopsgate Institute | Identifier: | http://www.20thcenturylondon.org.uk/rser... | Go to resource |
