Description: | A collection of over 500 glass microscope slides of diatoms (a type of algae), part of the collection of George Dickie (1812-1882), the first Professor of Natural History at Queen's College, Belfast (1849-60), then Professor of Botany in his native Aberdeen (1860-77). Dickie's publications included a chapter on "Algae and Diatomaceae" from the account of the Alert & Discovery expedition to the Polar Seas, 1875-6, and some of the specimens in this collection are from the expedition. The collection also includes specimens from Scotland (particularly Dundee, Aberdeen and Inverness), the USA, Canada, South America, Greenland, the Caribbean, Australia, New Zealand, Asia and India.
