Description: | Gilded reeded, 48.0 x 38.2 x 6.9 s. with butterfly; u.r. CRE WHISTLER, James McNeill; (American; 1834-1903) This laundress's shop is probably in 21-23 rue Notre Dame, Dieppe, France. Located just off the main square, in 1994 'Blanchisserie' was still written in the fascia, although it was no longer in use as such. Whistler was much impressed by the way the Dieppe laundresses treated his linen when he spent the summer and autumn of 1899 there, in comparison to the treatment it received in London. This, along with the charm of the delapidated shop front, probably influenced his choice of subject.
