Description: | Content of collection: Diatomales, Chlorophyceae, Rhodophyceae and Phaeophyceae.
The Algae Collection consists of approximately 3700 specimens mounted on around 1400 sheets, plus approximately 80 books of algae. Red algae are particularly prominent in this collection. The specimens have been collected from a broad range of places across the world, though the majority were collected in the United Kingdom. Most of the specimens once belonged to herbaria owned by George Dickie, Dr John McMurtrie and the algologist, Amelia Warren Griffith. Specimens from Dickie's herbarium were mainly collected in Aberdeenshire, Devon and northern parts of Ireland during the 1840s and 50s, and specimens from McMurtrie's Herbarium were predominantly collected from Heads of Ayr in the 1850s. Specimens from Griffith's Herbarium were mainly collected in Devon between the 1820s and 1850s.
7 diatom specimens in the collection are thought to be types (see Reference field). These are specimens of Dickieia dansei, Dickieia pinnata and Dickieia ulvoides.
Many of the volumes contain marine algae. There are 12 fascicules of the marine algae specialist Edward Morell Holmes' 'Algae Britannicae Rariores Exsiccatae' (London: late nineteenth century), for instance, and 16 volumes of John Cock's 'Algarum fasciculi - A collection of British Sea-Weeds, carefully dried and preserved, and correctly named after Dr. Harvey's "Phycologia Britannica"'. (Plymouth: William Brendon, 1855).
Of particular historical interest is a small selection of specimens collected during the 'Challenger' Expedition to Kerguelen Island in 1874 and the HMS 'Terror' expedition to the Falkland Islands in 1840; including two specimens collected by Dr. David Lyall, the University of Aberdeen graduate who became Assistant-Surgeon in charge of the HMS 'Terror' botanical investigations. | Source: | University of Aberdeen | Address: | King's College,
