General Roy Monument VADS Collection: Public Monuments and Sculpture Association
Marks site of SE terminal measured in 1784 under supervision of General Roy to determine relative positions of Paris and Greenwich Observatories. Additional Information: See HI17 Major Roy has been described as the 'father of Ordnance Survey'. The monument marks one end of the base line on the trigonometric survey, the other is at Heathrow. Ordnance Survey maps were originally commissioned by the military in order to calculate the position of the enemy and enable them to aim their canon accurately.

At Greenwich is the Hospital or Naval College, as it is called, the subject of the picture. Greenwich has a magnificent park, within which is the Royal Observatory. - At one period of English Hstory, Greenwich was a favourite residence of the RoyalFamily.
