Description: | White marble portrait bust. Additional Information: Sir Joseph Leigh, cotton manufacturer and Liberal politician was born in Stockport in 1841, the son of a cotton manufacturer. He was educated at Stockport Grammar School and assumed control of the family business on the death of his father. In 1875 he was elected as a Liberal councillor for Portwood. In 1884 he was elected mayor, winning a record four years in succession between 1866 and 1868. He was instrumental in the foundation of Stockport Technical School (1897) to which he contributed £3,500 and was MP for Stockport twice, between 1892 and 1895, and 1900 to 1906.
