Description: | In this work, Diana, Goddess of the Hunt, is surrounded by her nymphs and hounds. The crescent moon in her tiara also serves to remind the viewer of her other role, as Goddess of the Moon. The crowding of the figures and the elongation of their limbs are characteristics of Italian Mannerism, and can be compared with Bronzino's Venus, Cupid, Folly and Time in the National Gallery, London. Janssen was also influenced by Rubens however, and the superbly painted dead game in the foreground is evidence of this Flemish inspiration. | Subjects: | mythology (Diana); figure; animal (dog) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Janssens, Abraham (Flemish painter, ca.1575-1632) Æ Previously attributed to Bloemaert, Abraham (Dutch painter and draftsman, 1566-1651) | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8409... | Go to resource |
