Description: | Signed: yes Description: Sir William Fergusson (1808-1877) was born at Prestonpans, Scotland. He was a pupil of the Anatomist Dr Robert Knox, becoming his demonstrator. He came to London in 1840 on accepting the Professorship of Surgery at King's College, London. He later became Surgeon to both the Prince Consort and the Queen. He became president of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1870. Lehmann was a German portrait painter who was particularly successful among the English aristocracy during the latter part of the nineteenth century.
