In 1843 he began studying with Mendelssohn who took him to London where he played Beethoven's Violin Concerto with such success that it thereafter became inextricably linked with him. Bendemann, a German artist, studied under Wilhelm Schadow, Director of the Dusseldorf Kunstakademie and whom he later succeeded.
