Description: | This copy of a veduta painting by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto (1697-1768), depicts a scene in Venice, looking down the Grand Canal, a view that the artist painted many times. The canal is busy with people in boats and gondolas, going about their business. The domed church to the left of the canvas is S. Simeone Piccolo, and further down the canal is S. Croce. Venice was a popular destination for Grand Tourists, and Canaletto's paintings were thus sought-after as souvenirs, resulting in the large number of the artist's works in British collections. The original painting by Canaletto is in the Royal Collection. | Subjects: | Venice) figure; townscape; place (Grand Canal | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Canaletto (Italian painter, 1697-1768) Æ Attributed to after Previously attributed to school of Canaletto (Italian painter, 1697-1768) | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8614... | Go to resource |
