Description: | George Frideric Handel was born in 1685, the same year as Bach, in the German town of Hanover. By 1703 he had been appointed violinist composer for Hamburg's German opera, and in 1712, following some time spent in Italy, he travelled to London, where upon accession of the House of Hanover, he gained immediate access to the royal circle in England. His London years were largely spent in the writing of Italian operas, though later, after a stroke, and the critical failure of some of his work, he concentrated mainly on Oratorios, including his famous Messiah of 1741. In the latter years of his life, Handel went completely blind. | Subjects: | portrait (Handel) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: French School Æ Attributed to | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8677... | Go to resource |
