Description: | Signed: yes Description: The buildings of a village interspersed with trees are seen extending from the left as they border a canal. To the left are several figures and a boat. Above, the moon stands out among the clouds. Aert van der Neer (1603-77) was a painter of moonlit landscapes and winter scenes. This painting shows a marshland with a village by moonlight. In the foreground various figures are seen from the back and a boat is lying in the water of the swamp. According to C. Hofstede de Groot, in 'Hollandsche Kunst in Schotland', Oud Holland, 1890, vol. 11, p. 141, the 'AVN' monogram on this badly rubbed picture is false but the picture probably genuine. W. Schultz in his recent catalogue on the artist's work, calls the attribution 'questionable'. | Subjects: | landscape; figure | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Neer, Aert van der (Dutch painter, 1603-1677) Æ | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8796... | Go to resource |
