Description: | The Public Record Office contains many records of interest to theatre historians. The most important sources are: Lord Chamberlain's Office, LC 7 (1660-1901), which includes warrants, registers of licences, inspection reports and plans of theatres etc; LC 1 (1710-1902) is correspondence of the Office of the Lord Chamberlain, who is the licenser of theatres in and about the centre of London and at Windsor, and also the licenser of all stage plays. Board of Trade BT 31 (1855-1970) contains reports and papers of limited companies, including theatre companies. Home Office, HO 179 (1910-1921) relates to licencing and safety precautions; HO 119 (1792-1872) includes material on theatre disputes 1816-1818; HO 354 (1943-1974) contains papers of the Bateson Committee on the employment of children in theatres; general papers in HO 45 and HO 144 include material on many aspects of regulation of theatres, including censorship, employment of children, licensing and safety etc. from the mid 19th century to the mid 20th century. Ministry of Works WORK 6 (1609-1951) includes records on the King's Theatre Haymarket 1828-1829 and WORK 25 (1948-1952) has a variety of material on entertainments planned for the Festival of Britain 1951. Copyright Office, Stationers' Company COPY 1 (1837-1912) contains posters of various theatre productions and photographs of actors and actresses; COPY 3 (1842-1924) includes information on the registering of dramatic and musical performances. Many series of British Council records (BW) include material on British theatre companies travelling abroad and foreign companies entering Britain. There is also information relating to theatres in State Papers Domestic (SP), Exchequer Records (E), Privy Council Records (PC) and in the records of legal proceedings, Chancery (C) and Supreme Court of Judicature (J) in particular.; Lists and calendars of each series of record; on-line catalogue and key-word search facility
