Description: | Brighton and Hove have approximately 45,000 items amongst their rare books and special collections. The largest single collection is that formerly owned by Leonard Bloomfield, a military hatter, of Withdean, Brighton. Primary source material, such as playbills, span the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries; photographs and cashbooks relate to the late 19th century. Items include the following: copybook of T. Crofton-Coker, the Irish Antiquary, with 50 Irish playbills 1810-12; playbills and theatrical notices 1816-30; 278 playbills from Walnut Street Theatre, Philadelphia, September 1876-June 1877; approximately 100 programmes, tickets and newspaper cuttings relating to London theatres 1703-1825; Drury Lane Theatre cashbooks 1809-19; Prince of Wales Theatre, London, playbills May - Christmas 1816; playbills for Haymarket Theatre and Adelphi Theatre 1853; playbills for Covent Garden Theatre, October 1831 - June 1832; playbills relating to Covent Garden Theatre and Olympic Theatre, October 1832 - July 1833; playbills for New Strand Theatre 1849 - August 1850; Lionel Brough's copy of "That Heathen Chinee" presented at the Globe Theatre December 1874 - July 1875 with watercolour sketches and photographs; manuscript of characters played by celebrated artistes c.1792, including John Kemble, Mrs Siddons etc; manuscript register of performances at the Theatre Royal at the following places: Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham, Chester 1826-1843; theatre programmes (mainly London) c.1930-1950; album of photographs, mostly portraits of actors and actresses and members of the Royal Family c.1896; volume containing 137 original photographs chiefly of theatrical celebrities of the 19th century.; Card catalogue
