Description: | The Newspaper Library collections in Colindale currently contain:
i) over 664,000 bound volumes and parcels of items, occupying some 32 kilometres (or 20 miles) of shelves; over 330,000 reels of microfilm, on 13 kilometres (or 8 miles) of shelf space; holdings altogether occupying some 45 kilometres (or 28 miles) of shelving in total;
ii) the most comprehensive collection in the world of newspapers published in the UK and in the Republic of Ireland, including free newspapers, with about 2,600 current British and Irish periodicals received via legal deposit;
iii) complete files of the main London edition of all the national daily and Sunday papers, from 1801 to the present day;
iv) unrivalled collections of English provincial, Irish, Scottish, and Welsh newspapers dating back to as early as 1699;
v) newspaper collections, both modern and historic, from countries all across the world in western and Slavonic languages, dating back to 1631, including an extensive collection of newspapers from Commonwealth countries, which were formerly received through colonial copyright deposit, as well as research collections of world importance from many other countries including France, Germany, Russia, and the United States;
vi) British and Irish weekly and fortnightly periodicals (as well as many monthlies and some published less frequently) received via legal deposit. These are mainly those covering popular culture and entertainment subjects; particular collection strengths include: fashion, pop music, cinema and film, theatre and the music hall, sports (such as football), hobbies, trade journals, comics and children's magazines, women's magazines (from suffragette papers to today's glossies), radical and political papers (especially anarchist, Chartist, and fascist ones), religious periodicals, and exile and ethnic minority newspapers and journals (especially German-language ones);
vii) major specialist collections, including those of General Strike newspapers of 1926 and of Victorian illustrated newspapers and journals, as well as the visual arts collections generally;
viii) special collections in microform, including Early American Newspapers, Early English Newspapers based on The Burney Collection of Newspapers; Northern Ireland Political Literature: Periodicals, 1966-1989; the Francis Place Collection of press cuttings and ephemera relating to politics and economics, 1792-1852; The Underground and Alternative Press in Britain, 1966-1983; a Tuskegee Institute News Clippings File relating to the history of African-Americans, 1899-1966; and The Dutch Underground Press, 1940-1945.
The open-access reference shelves contain: the complete published indexes to The Times, The New York Times, and to a range of other newspapers, particularly those from Britain, Ireland, and the United States, as well as some from Australia, Canada, the Caribbean, France, Germany, South Africa, and other countries;
complete sets of Willings Press Guide and Benn's Media (and its predecessor, the Newspaper Press Directory); a developing collection of bibliographies and guides to newspapers, periodicals, and the history of the press;
historical reference works, including almanacs and year books;
dictionaries, including the Oxford English Dictionary, and encyclopedias, including the Encyclopedia Britannica;
biographical guides, including Who's Who and the Dictionary of National Biography; and the British Humanities Index (and its predecessor, the Subject Index to Periodicals).
Some free newspapers which are 100% advertising are not retained; and copies of newspapers in oriental and middle-eastern scripts published in the UK are held at the main British Library in St Pancras within the Oriental and India Office Collections.; Online and printed catalogues are available in the Reading Rooms; the Newspaper Library Web Catalogue is also available at http://www.bl.uk/collections/newspaper/newscat.html
