Description: | The collection of dance materials held in the Library of the Royal Academy of Dance (formerly the Royal Academy of Dancing) provides a comprehensive reference source, not only for students enrolled on a programme of study at the Academy, but also for anyone involved in dance research from GCSE level to post-graduate study.
The book collection in the Library contains more than 5,000 titles covering all aspects of ballet and dance from history and biography to movement notation and technique. With the emphasis of Academy programmes on Teacher Education, books on education and psychology form a growing part of the Library?s collection. The Library also houses a vast quantity of international dance magazines, programmes and souvenir brochures of major ballet and dance companies from the 1920s onwards. The photographic archive of the late G.B.L. Wilson is also housed in the Library along with the personal collections of two of the founders of the Academy - Dame Adeline Gen?e, the first President of the Academy and Phyllis Bedells.
Since the amalgamation of the Benesh Institute with the Royal Academy of Dance (formerly the Royal Academy of Dancing) in 1997, the Library is also the home of a unique collection of over 1,000 Benesh Movement Notation (BMN) scores. This distinctive and extraordinary collection includes records of great choreographic works such as Ashton?s La Fille mal Gard?e, Peter Wright?s The Nutcracker, MacMillan?s Romeo and Juliet and Hans Van Manen?s Five Tangos. It also encompasses a number of scores, which explore the use of BMN as a tool for anthropological and clinical research such as Julia McGuiness?s application of BMN to Cerebral Palsy research and Andr?e Grau?s study of Ugandan Dances.
The video collection in the Library is diverse, ranging from teaching syllabi and examinations footage to classical gala performances and modern dance documentaries.; Card index, Dance on Disk. Searchable catalogue available online.
