Description: | While probably better known as a film director (If...., This Sporting Life) Lindsay Anderson also had a long and distinguished career as a theatre director. The University of Stirling holds Anderson's personal and working papers which include material relating to 40 plays he directed between 1957 - 1992. He directed his first play at the Royal Court Theatre in London in 1957. This was the start of a long association with the Royal Court where Anderson directed many new and challenging pieces of theatre including Sergeant Musgrave's Dance by John Arden in 1959, Billy Liar by Keith Waterhouse in 1960, The Fire Raisers by Max Frisch in 1961 and In Celebration by David Storey in 1969. In Celebration was the first of 9 of Storey's plays that Anderson directed, writer and director developing a successful working partnership. In a theatre career spanning 35 years Anderson also turned his hand to established classics directing a number of productions of Shakespeare (Julius Caesar and Hamlet) and Chekhov (The Cherry Orchard and The Seagull). He also directed several productions outside the UK, in Poland, Australia and the USA.
