Description: | Specimen of a fossil fish, Pygopterus mandibularis, collected from the Marl SLate of Late Permian, Zechstein (Durham Province), EZ1 age.
Pygopterus mandibularis was a large fish that lived in the warm sea that covered the Sunderland area 250 million years ago. Pygopterus ate smaller fishes, such as the herring-like Palaeoniscum, a fish that probably lived in shoals (groups). We know that Pygopterus hunted smaller fish, because there are fossils of Pygopterus with the remains of smaller fish in its stomach.
