Description: | IU inscr. in pencil b.l. "Picasso / The Frugal Meal" CRE PICASSO, Pablo; (Spanish; 1881-1973) PUB VOLLARD, Ambroise; (French; 1867-1939) PRINT FORT, Louis; (French; fl. 1910) One of 250 impressions on Van Gelder printed by Fort in 1913, and published by Ambroise Vollard in the portfolio of prints by Picasso called Les Saltimbanques. This is the first etching Picasso made in Paris. The subject relates closely to his Blue period paintings, and it is a curious mixture of influences. The elongated forms of the two figures, and angular gestures are influenced by El Greco, but the subject, of poor people drinking, is Realist, or Impressionist in inspiration. Early impressions were printed by Eugene Delatre to whom Picasso was introduced by fellow Catalan artist Joachim Sunyer Miro, who had lived in Paris for 10 years and was an an experienced printmaker. | License: | http://www.hmag.gla.ac.uk/spirit/rights/ | Publisher: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Rights holder: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Subjects: | FIGURE : FEMALE : FOOD : POVERTY : BLUE PERIOD : EL GRECO : IMPRESSIONIST SUBJECT : BLIND MAN : | Source: | Hunterian Museum | Creator: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Identifier: | http://www.huntsearch.gla.ac.uk/cgi-bin/... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
