Description: | Gilded reeded s. r. with a butterfly; l.r. CRE WHISTLER, James McNeill; (American; 1834-1903) It is not certain when Whistler worked in Belle Isle, but his pictures of this subject are unified in medium and technique. A photograph of this watercolour, taken by William E. Grace, probably about 1900, confirms the title given in Miss Birnie Philip's list of 1901. (See also GLAHA 46281). Whistler mastered the difficult technique of painting in watercolour on fragile, lustrous, Japan paper. He manipulated apparently chance effects with great skill. The way in which the brush edged around the shapes of the rocks in the foreground is expressive and satisfying, like a masterpiece of Oriental art.
