"White reeded 103" PRINT WAY, Thomas Robert; (English; 1861-1913) PUB THE STUDIO CRE WHISTLER, James McNeill; (American; 1834-1903) By mid-February, 1896, Whistler had moved with his terminally ill wife from De Vere House, in Kensington, to the Savoy Hotel. The hotel, which opened in August, 1889, was one of London?s finest. The Whistlers occupied one of the upper suites above the Victoria Embankment, and their windows looked out to sweeping views of the Thames. During their stay at the Savoy, Whistler divided his time between painting in temporary studios and drawing by his wife?s bedside. "Savoy Pigeons" takes its title from the two birds perched on the metal railing of the Whistler?s balcony and the finest lifetime proofs of this image are notable for the clarity of the lightest lines as well as delicate tonal gradations. This lithograph was printed by Thomas Way in 1896 and published by "The Studio" in November of the same year. (See also GLAHA 49150/49152/49515/49516/49619).
