Description: | Unmounted (1) s. in stone with butterfly; u.r.
(2) stamp; v. square stamp of Miss Rosalind Birnie Philip CRE WHISTLER, James McNeill; (American; 1834-1903) PRINT WAY, Thomas Robert; (English; 1861-1913) Whistler sketched "Late Picquet" in a small café in Paris; four men playing cards have captured the momentary attention of a woman seated nearby. Thomas Way particularly liked this image and when he wrote to tell Whistler that the new transfer had arrived safely he asked "what is the subject of the new drawing? It is very good." During July and early August of 1894 Whistler was experiencing a revived interest in lithography, and as such the Way firm had to struggle to keep up with the constantly arriving transfer drawings. This lithograph was printed by Thomas Way. (See also GLAHA 49075/ 49351-49355/ 49585/49671/ 49776-49783/ 49868).
