Description: | Unmounted CRE WHISTLER, James McNeill; (American; 1834-1903) PRINT GOULDING, Frederick (English; 1842-1909) This is a posthumous printing. After Whistler?s death in 1903, his heir and sister-in-law, Rosalind Birnie Philip, commissioned the London printer, Frederick Goulding, to print posthumous editions of many of Whistler?s lithographs. Between October 1903 and May 1904, Goulding pulled impressions from 94 stones and transferred and printed 10 previously untransferred lithographic drawings. This lithograph was never printed in Whistler?s lifetime. Although it was probably drawn in France in 1893, it is likely that it was then set aside when Whistler decided not to send any more lithographic stones across the channel for processing.
