Description: | Unframed s. in plate with butterfly; u.r. CRE WHISTLER, James McNeill; (American; 1834-1903) This is a copper etching plate. Whistler married the widow of E. W. Godwin, Beatrix Godwin, in August, 1888. Their honeymoon tour took them through the Loire area of France, where Whistler used the 34 grounded copper plates he had taken with him to capture views and buildings that appealed to him as they went. The couple viewed a number of chateaux as well as travelling through the picturesque towns of Touraine. The subjects of building fronts and streetscapes were favourites with Whistler and allowed the artist ample opportunity to experiment with compositional devices, as well as the contrast of light and shadow in windows and open doorways. This particular view holds an additional attraction for Whistler in the elaborate stonework and architectural ornament of a church facade.
