Description: | Mechanical ships log to record distance run using a spinning propellor towed behind the vessel and attached to a mechanical dial revs recorder mounted on the rear of the vessel. Thomas Walker's "Excelsior" IV Patent Log in original box containing recorder in weighty brass housing on a swivelling arm, with attached safety line, propellor attached to 100 feet braided cord (in two lengths, one short and one long) with lead sinker close to propellor, hook to attach line to recorder, almost empty tin of Walkers log oil, two shoes for attaching recorder to vessel (one for port and one for starboard side; the log is best towed on the lea side), spare bevelled glass for recorder head (under oil can) and spare sealing gasket for front of recorder. Dial (beneath glass cover attached with safety chain) has main dial with markings up to 100 nautical miles and secondary dial showing distances to 10 nautical miles, marked in quarter miles. Instructions on yellow paper pasted into lid. Front of box has balck lettering "Walker's/ "Excelsior" IV Patent Log/ (for Yachts, Motor Launches and small Fishing Craft)/Made in England by Thos. Walker & Son's Ltd., 58 Oxford Street, Birmingham."
