Description: | On blue paper, this atmospheric drawing shows trees on a slope to the far left and a tree to the right on a bank, creating a small 'valley' in which the cottage sits to the centre left. The foreground is mostly shadowed and dark, with some light still reflecting on a bank at the right. A road leads from the bottom right corner to the centre, near the cottage, where a figure on horseback, casting a long shadow and a figure on foot are walking past the cottage. There are some sheep in shadow at the near left. There is white smoke (?) coming from behind the bank on the right and in the centre, some water, trees and possibly buildings are visible in the distance. Grey cloud, white edged on the left, dominates the sky to the right.
Unsigned.
Ball describes the scene as "...rather late evening, with a low saffron light streaking the sky." Sir Charles Rich (donor's husband d. <1935) 'descended on his mother's side from the Sandbys ... was the last surviving relative of the family. He had pictures given him by various members of the family - and inherited some from Mr. William Sandby who lent a number to the 'Special Exhibition of Drawings and Pictures by Paul & Thomas Sandby [Castle Mus. 1884]'
