Description: | Collection of extremely interesting documents relating to his service in the RNAS and RAF (1917 – 1919), and his capture and time as a prisoner of war in Germany (1918); including: flying log book (74pp) covering his training as a pilot at RNAS Redcar, Yorkshire, RNAS Cranwell and RNAS Frieston, Lincolnshire (October 1917 – March 1918), and his service in France with No 1 Squadron (March 1918) and No 201 Squadron RAF (April – July 1918); a ms diary (56pp) covering his service in France, with descriptions of dog fights and bombing raids over the front line (March – July 1918); ms letters (93pp) he wrote to his family in Manchester, describing his training and service in France, being shot down and wounded, and his treatment in a German prisoner of war hospital in Siegen (August – November 1918) and then in a hospital in Giessen, France (November 1918 – February 1919); ms and ts letters and other related documents (53pp) sent to his parents by the British authorities regarding his capture and imprisonment by the Germans (August 1918 – January 1919); and 2 photograph albums (32pp) containing photographs of Riddell, his family, and aircraft (c1918).
