Description: | Ms memoir (94pp), together with an illustrated ts transcription (63pp including background notes), describing his service with the Royal Garrison Artillery during the First World War, referring to the announcement of war received in his village of Elham in Kent, his enlistment and training which was interrupted by an outbreak of German Measles, his posting to Sheringham in Norfolk, an accident in which he was shot while cleaning a rifle, his recuperation and subsequent posting to 133 Heavy Battery RGA at Winchester, their embarkation for France (July 1917) and arrival at the Front near Arras before moving north to the Ypres Salient in time for the Third Battle of Ypres, the intense shelling and devastation to the surrounding area, the use of poison gas, his move to the Somme sector (February 1918) and experience of the German spring offensive (21 March 1918), his unit's retreat and the confusion this caused, before the Allied advance towards the Hindenberg Line, the capture of Cambrai (1918), a visit by the Prince of Wales, the announcement of the Armistice, and his demobilisation and return home.
