Description: | Microfilm copy of a ts transcription (98pp) of his diary and letters home covering his service with the 3rd Battalion Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders on garrison duty at Woolwich Arsenal, London in August 1914; as the machine gun officer of the 2nd Battalion Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders (19th Brigade, 6th Division) on the Western Front, September 1914 - January 1915, including the battles of the Marne and the Aisne in September and Armentieres in October, participation in the Christmas Truce and good descriptions of the nature and conditions of trench warfare; and as a pilot with No 7 Squadron RFC in France in July 1915; together with a ts transcription (23pp) of telegrams and letters of condolence sent after he died of wounds in August 1915 following the reconnaissance flight for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross.
