Description: | Ms letter (8pp), with ts transcription (3pp), written home to his daughter while serving as a Private with an unidentified infantry battalion on the Western Front, 22 July 1918, referring to his deliberate circumvention of the censor while describing his journey in cattle trucks to the Marne where he met the German advance of spring 1918, the subsequent Allied retreat alongside civilian refugees, and his optimism regarding a German surrender. Together with a photograph of him in uniform.
