Description: | Word processed ts account (undated 13pp) of his service as an Australian pilot mechanic with the Royal Flying Corps in Mesopotamia during the First World War, based on the diary he kept at the time and containing interesting details concerning his experiences in Baghdad, the Battle of Ctesiphon (November 1915) and the siege of Kut (December 1915 - April 1916) notably recording Turkish activity and weaponry, the serious lack of food in his garrison causing increased casualties and various failed attempts to get food reinforcements into the town until their subsequent surrender (April 1916); then his experiences as a prisoner of war marching through Mesopotamia to Turkey via Baghdad, Samara, Mosul, Nissbin, Aleppo and Entilly, an attempted escape only to be recaptured (October 1916), the good treatment he received from some Turkish soldiers in Adana before being sent to the civil prison where he comments on prison conditions being very good, their meals and entertainment, until being moved to a camp run by Germans at Deringi (October 1917), referring to the poor conditions and lack of interest shown for their welfare, and finally receiving news of their exchange (October 1918) to a British settlement near Smyrna.
