Description: | 4 pocket diaries (1915 - 1918) with a word processed account based on the diaries (20pp, written in 1989 by his son), kept by him during his service with 168 Machine Gun Company (2/14th Battalion London Regiment), covering his training at Dorking (January - March 1915) and Woking (March - August 1915), his posting to France and experiences on the Loos Salient (September 1915), in the Doullens area (February 1916), on the Somme (July 1916), at Laventie (October 1916), Arras (April - May 1917), and at Bailleul (March 1918), and his evacuation to England following a gas attack and home posting to No.18 Company Machine Gun Corps, Northumberland; including notes on the advance and counter-attack at Loos (August 1915), Christmas celebrations (1915), his attachment to the Signals Section (June 1916) and preparations for the Somme Battle, his signalling duties, the advance at Arras (April - May 1917), and his trench duties opposite Inchy (November 1917), and with good details of the Battle of the Somme (July 1916). Also with the collection is a cyclostyled sports programme for 168 Machine Gun Company (June 1917) and 25 aerial trench photographs.
