Description: | Original ms and amended ts drafts of Siegfried Sassoon's "Memoirs of an Infantry Officer" (Faber and Faber, 1930), the second volume in his semi-autobiographical trilogy, showing the development of the book from the first draft to the page proof stage; the book describes his experiences as a 2nd Lieutenant with the 2nd Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers (19th Brigade, 33rd Division) on the Western Front, spring 1916 - March 1917, and concludes with an account of his public protest against the continuation of the war in July 1917 while convalescing in the United Kingdom from a shoulder wound. The collection includes two drawings by Rex Whistler and Stephen Tennant, together with a notebook containing ms prose (15pp) by Sassoon regarding the medical board following his protest and time spent in Craiglockhart War Hospital with neurasthenia, plus ms drafts (16pp) of various poems, including fragments of several unpublished ones, 1929 - 1932.
