Description: | Very detailed diary account (294pp) covering his service as a Petty Officer in the cruiser HMS TALBOT, employed on patrol duties in the English Channel, August 1914 - March 1915 (except when escorting the first Canadian contingent across the Atlantic, September - October 1914) and then as a supporting ship with the Eastern Mediterranean Squadron during the Gallipoli campaign, including the landings at Anzac (25 April 1915) and Suvla Bay (6 August 1915). In November 1915, Powell was appointed coxswain of motor lighter X 152, which helped to evacuate troops from Anzac and Cape Helles, December 1915 - January 1916, and served on the River Tigris in Mesopotamia in April 1916; after a period of sickness, he joined the converted paddle steamer LAWRENCE in the Persian Gulf in May 1917, remaining in the Persian Gulf in May 1917, remaining in the ship until he took passage home in December 1918 for demobilisation.
