Description: | Collection of 402 ms letters written to his family during service on the Western Front as a subaltern with the 8th Heavy Brigade RGA (8th Division) and then as a Major with the 251st Siege Battery RGA, December 1914 - July 1919, providing details of camp life and his training, life as an officer in an artillery battery in France, his movements throughout the war, the nature of trench warfare including periods of boredom as well as involvement in major battles including Neuve Chapelle (March 1915), the Somme and Arras, recreational activities including sports and concerts, details of gas attacks and his first sighting of tanks (September 1916), trench fever (August 1917), staffing problems, the effect on him of the Armistice and his plans after demobilisation; together with miscellaneous postcards, photographs and letters.
