Description: | Ts transcription (47pp) of a diary written during his service as a signaller with the 60th Divisional Field Company RE on the Western Front, June - December 1916, describing his embarkation, arrival at the front and the intense shelling, aerial warfare, visits to observation posts, his involvement in running an army canteen, and off duty trips to Marseilles; at Salonika, December 1916 - June 1917, where he recounts the voyage out and conditions onboard ship, his impressions of Salonika town, continued efforts with the canteen, the capture and execution of Turkish spies, move to headquarters at Karasouli in the Vardar sector (March 1917), bombing raids from German aircraft, move to Cugunci in the Doiran sector (June 1917) before receiving orders to disembark; and finally in Egypt and Palestine, July 1917 - April 1919, referring to off duty sightseeing, the capture of Beersheba (31 October 1917) and Sheria (7 November 1917), aerial warfare, visits to the holy places in Jerusalem, the large number of refugees he met during the advance north, his contracting of malaria and hospitalisation in Alexandria, and duties escorting despatches until his demobilisation and voyage home.
