Description: | Microfilm copy of a ms account (650pp, illustrated with photographs) covering his service with the 6th Battalion Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry (20th Division), 1914 - 1916, and with No 26 (South Africa) Squadron RFC and the RAF in the Middle East, East Africa and South Africa, 1917 - 1919, describing his training, an inspection by Lord Kitchener (February 1915), arrival in France and time in the trenches at Sailly sur Lys (July - August 1915), involvement in action near Aubers Ridge, the preparation for the Battle of Loos and their attack at Mauquissait, trench warfare, a machine gun course at Wisques (January 1916), service on the Ypres front where he compares conditions including messing arrangements, and his stay in Lady Londonderry's Hospital after being wounded (March 1916 - January 1917) including a visit to the hospital by HM King George V. He then joined an RFC training squadron at Heliopolis in May 1917 and describes naval red tape at Alexandria, his first solo flight, accidents and deaths among trainee pilots, his service with the South African Aviation Corps in East Africa (September 1917 - February 1918) describing reconnaissance work and bombing raids before taking an extended leave in South Africa and being posted to Mudros, falling ill during the journey and convalescing in Florence, arriving in Mudros in January 1919 and then travelling to Malta where he mentions the revolt of British West Indian troops in Taranto; moving next to Egypt (February 1919), he spent time in a demobilisation camp at Kantara (May - June 1919) before returning to the United Kingdom.
