Description: | Ts account (3pp) of his experiences with the Machine Gun Corps in France, 1915 - 1919, initially with the 10th Machine Gun Company (4th Division) describing the fighting and heavy casualties on the First Day of the Battle of the Somme (1 July 1916) and the Vimy-Arras Offensive in April 1917; then his appointment as Divisional Machine Gun Officer and his posting home to command a Service Company; his return to France as DMGO to the 36th Division and service during the German spring offensive (March 1918) at St Quentin where they suffered heavy casualties; and his transfer to the 47th Battalion MGC with whom he took part in the fall of Lille and the crossing of the Scheldt.
