Description: | Photostat copy of an undated ms account (43pp), together with a later edited ts transcript (27pp), covering his enlistment and service as a Sergeant in the 9th Battalion King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiments (65th Brigade, 22nd Division) under training in the United Kingdom (September 1914 - August 1915), in France (September - October 1915) and then on the Macedonian front up to his capture in December 1915; his subsequent experiences at the prisoner of war camps at Tatar Bazardjik and Philippopolis in Bulgaria, with many references to the appalling conditions and treatment there and, more particularly, during their forced march immediately after being taken prisoner and when with working parties away from the camps; and his repatriation via Salonika, Italy and France (October - November 1918). Photocopies of two annotated picture postcards of Philippopolis are preserved with the account.
