Description: | Ms diary (216pp) recording his service as a Lance Corporal with the 1/6th (City of Glasgow) Battalion Highland Light Infantry (157th Brigade, 52nd Division), May 1915 - April 1916, including work as a battalion medical orderly from August 1915, containing excellent descriptions of his initial voyage out to Egypt, landing at Cape Helles, Gallipoli (2 July 1915), involvement in the Battle of Achi Baba Nullah (12 July 1915), the atrocious weather conditions of November - December, and the final evacuation of the Peninsula (January 1916), with interesting details such as the use of metallic discs worn on the back of advancing troops to aid artillery observation, bonfires to draw Turkish fire, and a demonstration by the Allied troops in September 1915 to celebrate the success of their comrades in France, plus references to a Turkish deserter, food rations, trench conditions, Christmas celebrations, and his recuperation and training in Egypt from January 1916.
