Description: | Ts transcription of his diary (with diagrams, 75pp) recording his service as an officer in the Scots Guards commanding No 1 Platoon in the Cyclist Company of the 2nd Division (I Corps), August - November 1914, including: embarking from ships at Le Havre and the journey by train to the concentration area in France, August 1914; active service in the Battle of Mons and subsequent retreat, August - September 1914; the Battle of the Marne and pursuing the retreating Germans to the Aisne, September 1914; the Battle of the Aisne, September - October 1914; the transfer of the BEF to Flanders, October 1914; and the First Battle of Ypres, October - November 1914, when he was killed in action; and commenting on his duties; his off-duty entertainment; the conditions; his baptism of fire; the loss of his friends; the severe fighting and heavy casualties; the destructive force of German shelling; atrocities against German prisoners by French African troops; spy mania; relations with the local inhabitants; and the desolation of the battlefield.
