Description: | Ms diary (106pp), written in a notebook also including some fifteen photographs, kept during his service as a rating in the cruiser HMS GRAFTON, June 1915 - June 1917, and covering the ship's passage out to the Eastern Mediterranean and her employment initially off Gallipoli on bombardment duties in support of the troops ashore up to their evacuation (August 1915 - January 1916), against Turkish positions on the peninsula and in the Gulf of Smyrna (January - June 1916), in support of the British Salonika Force on the Struma river front in Macedonia (July - December 1916) and finally based on Imbros as part of the British naval force guarding the entrance to the Dardanelles until she suffered minor damage when she was torpedoed by a U-boat (January - June 1917), with the most enteresting entries recording the effects of GRAFTON's bombardments and the casualties and damage inflicted on her by enemy shelling and bombing; together with a brief ms log (1p) of the six voyages made by the minesweeper HMS ALBURY in May - June 1940 to evacuate Allied troops from Dunkirk, three flimsies covering Earley's service as a Warrant and Commissioned Engineer RN (January 1942 - May 1946), picture postcards of the Dardanelles campaign and a photograph of Earley in uniform taken in 1948.
