Description: | Ts transcribed memoir (31pp) based on an original diary written during his service with the Royal Field Artillery (9th Scottish Division) from November 1916 to March 1918, providing a detached but comprehensive account of his active service on the Western Front throughout the last years of the First World War, commenting on his journey from Southampton to Le Havre on 8 November 1916, the deserted towns and the constant shelling he encountered on the way to the trenches of Arras, the inadequate rations, lack of equipment and poor conditions of the camp once he reached his destination, his role in the attack on Passchendaele ridge and his movements throughout the Battle of Arras in 1917, ending when he fractures his ankle and is sent back to the Coventry and Warwick Hospital in England on 9 February 1918 where he remained until the Armistice was declared.
