Description: | 2 ms notebooks (65pp), with a ts transcription (15pp), recounting his experiences as a prisoner of war, 1915 - 1918, after being captured by Turkish forces whilst serving as a Private with the 1/8th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers (125th Brigade, 42nd Division) at Gallipoli, describing the march and sea journey to Stamboul Gaol in Constaninople, being robbed by his guards, the appalling conditions in the gaol, marching to prison camps at Angora and Khiangherei, the poor quality and lack of food, outbreaks of disease, receiving money and clothing from the Red Cross and the Dutch Consul, working on the Baghdad railway and his admittance to hospital after contracting malaria and dysentery; together with a photograph of him and other PoW's at Stamboul Gaol, a photograph of PoW's onboard HMS SUPERB and a photocopied photograph of him in uniform; an ms letter (1p), undated, to him from either the Red Cross or the Dutch Consul; a message from the King and a Special Order of the Day, 1918, welcoming him home; various Army forms including his demobilisation papers; a press cutting showing some of the survivors of the 1/8th Lancashire Fusiliers, 1 March 1919; an invitation to a party, 6 February 1919; various calling cards and addresses collected on the journey back to Britain; and a National Health Insurance Certificate and Registration Card.
