Description: | 2 ms diaries (369pp) written by him during his service with the 2/5th Battalion London Rifle Brigade (2/2nd London Brigade, 2/1st London Division) between 1 January 1915 and 31 December 1916 with detailed accounts of his time training at Haywards Heath in the United Kingdom including drilling, target practice, trench digging, rifle drill routines and night entrenching, then on the Western Front with mention of trench fighting at Dickebusch, St Pol, Death Valley, Troues Valley and Richebourg, as well as life in the trenches with continual trench pumping, incessant German shelling, the hardships of 'living in the ground' and his admission into hospital following a direct hit by a gas shell in December 1916.
