Description: | Ts transcript (74pp) of a well-written diary kept during his service as a Captain in the 9th Field Ambulance (3rd Division) Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) in France and Belgium from August - November 1914, including fine descriptions of the retreat from Mons and the fighting on the Marne and Aisne; ts and ms memoirs (27pp) covering his subsequent service in the 8th Field Ambulance (3rd Division) on the Ypres front (September 1915 - July 1916) and during the Battle of the Somme (July - September 1916); and then as Lieutenant Colonel in command of the 142nd Field Ambulance (3rd Division) up to December 1917 with some references to the Battles of Arras and Third Ypres; together with two correspondence books relating to the general administration of the 142nd Field Ambulance and recommendations for awards to its personnel. The collection provides some valuable insights into the work and efficiency of the Army medical services on the Western Front and into the morale of the BEF during the retreat from Mons.
