Description: | 443 loose photographic prints and 496 contained in two damaged albums covering the military service of C M Maltby from 1909 - 1937. The pre-WWI material covers Maltby's time as an officer cadet at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, and his service with the 1st Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment in India (1910-11). For the former there are photographs of cadets in training, a football match and the RMA buildings. Coverage of Maltby's service with the Royal Sussex Regiment begins with photographs taken during his journey to India on the HMT DONGOLA. These are followed by a number of images taken at Rawalpindi depicting sports, officers and men of the Battalion and the local terrain. There are also interesting photographs of the unit's field training camp in 1911. Bolarum Camp and a hockey match at Muree are also covered. For WWI, when Maltby served with the 95th Russell's Infantry, there is a group photograph of the Regiment's British officers in 1914, along with a number of images relating to operations against the Pathans in 1916, including views of military camps (including Subhan Khwar), defensive posts, burning villages and troops involved in the operations. There are also photographs covering British and Indian troops under instruction at the Central Bombing School, Lahore (December 1916 - March 1917) and on a machine gun course at Changla Gali (October 1916). These include group photographs of the officers and NCOs under instruction. Similar images are included from a period of training at Nowshera (17 March - 6 June 1917). For 1917, the collection also covers the camp at Miranshah, BE2c aircraft of the RFC at Risalpur and scenes around Adozai on the Swat River. There is also an excellent photograph of a group of armed Waziris. The next chronological series of photographs cover Russell's Infantry in Mesopotamia (1917-1918). Places covered include Basra, Baghdad, Kerbala, Kut el Amara, Ishanderiyeh, Museyib, Nasriyeh and the Hindiyeh Barrage. Subjects include troops training, military camps, the local inhabitants, archaeological sites, including Babylon, officer's duck shooting, Turkish memorials at Kut el Amara and group photographs of officers and men of the Regiment. The collection also offers limited coverage of the Regiment's troopship journey to Salonika in November 1918, with a series of photographs including Aden as viewed from the sea, the Suez Canal and Port Said. Those taken at the latter location include officers bathing and a Japanese destroyer. For Salonika, where the 95th found itself from late 1918 into 1919, there are more photographs of officers and men of the Regiment along with those depicting the local inhabitants, Salonika town, Regimental sports, mascots, camps at Dudular, Yanesh and the former site of 28 General Hospital, a group of Chinese Labour Corps men. The recreational pursuits of officers are also well covered with a series of photographs covering duck shooting at Guvezne and golf at Uchantar. Following these are a series of photographs taken during 1919, when the Regiment formed part of the occupation forces in Turkey. Locations covered are Amassia (Amasya or Amasia), Samsoun (Samsun), Constantinople and Chanak. Again there are general photographs taken around the towns, including the ACRNE Hospital at Samsoun. There are also photographs of military camps, Allied warships, views across and along the Bosphorus, officers bathing at Anadolu Fever (July 1920) and the Regiment forming a guard of honour during a naval march through Constantinople. Maltby's post-WWI service is covered by photographs taken in India and Muscat during the 1920s. Of particular interest are a number of internal and external views of the buildings of the Indian Army Staff College at Quetta taken in 1924 and a series of 4 photographs depicting men enlisted by the 10th Battalion, 4th/9th Regiment. These include a group of new Indian recruits in civilian dress, a PT squad, a group engaged in musketry practice and a group of trained soldiers and NCOs in dress uniform. There are also general scenes in Mhow, Hyderabad, Kashmir and the hill station of Muree and depictions of the fort and barracks at Jask along with a number showing the landscape and local inhabitants of Muscat. Finally, miscellaneous material includes an undated formal group photograph of the 95th Russell's Infantry hockey team (probably early 1920s), views of Gibraltar from the sea (December 1918), the Grand Harbour at Malta and the harbour at Marseilles. | Publisher: | http://www.iwm.org.uk | Subjects: | Mesopotamia 1914-1918 Ottoman Empire Salonika Campaign 1915-1918 95th Russell's Infantry Salonika 1915-1918 Indian Army Balkans First World War Indian Army 1914-1918 | Source: | Imperial War Museum | Identifier: | http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/o... | Go to resource |
