Description: | 71 ms letters and cards sent to his family, June – July 1916 and January 1917 – April 1918, with ts reminiscences (20pp) covering his service initially as a junior officer and later as a company commander (? July 1917 – 1918) with the 2nd Battalion South Lancashire Regiment (64th Infantry Brigade, 21st Divison) during the Somme Offensive, prior to being wounded on 13 July 1916, in the Armentières sector in trenches near Steenwerck (early 1917) and in the Ypres sector during the Battle of Messines Ridge (June 1917), with excellent descriptions of the effects of the mines detonated prior to the attack and mention of the Battalion’s role in the advance on Ferme de la Croix (14 June 1917) and in trenches near Hooge (1 -5 August 1917) during the Third Battle of Ypres, with references to front line conditions and collecting war souvenirs, also details of his trip to Paris (August 1917) and a Lewis Gun course near Boulogne (March 1918) as well as to his dismay at the changes made to the Battalion in April 1918; together with an ms record of his movements (12pp, 1916 – 1918), two certificates and a warrant, papers relating to house insurance against loss or damage by aircraft (1916), 23 contemporary postcards and greetings cards, an identity card for his sister and four photographs, as well as papers relating to his brother Dr K E Eckenstein, who served in France as a hospital physician and as a battalion medical officer in the French Army (1st Infantry Regiment) comprising 44 ms letters and cards (including French field postcards) written between October 1915 and January 1917 with brief details of conditions, medical arrangements in his unit and listing the different places where he was based, together with his British passport (October 1914), documents (mainly in French) concerning his military service and the awards and decorations he received including three scrolls.
