Description: | Scale: 1: 48. A contemporary full hull model of the 16-gun sailing brig ?Siren? (1841). The solid wooden hull is made in ?bread and butter? fashion and is complete with two stump masts, channels with deadeyes, a number of deck fittings including hatches, skylight and a capstan. The model is mounted on turned brass pillars and fitted to an original wooden baseboard. This model also represents the following vessels in this class of brig: HMS ?Atalanta?; HMS ?Camilla?; HMS ?Hellena?; HMS ?Jumna?; HMS ?Mosquito? and HMS ?Rover?.
The ?Siren? was built at HM Dockyard Woolwich as the first of a large class of brigs that were used for a variety of roles. Measuring 110 feet along the gundeck by 34 feet in the beam and a tonnage of 549 gross, these vessels were armed with 16 carronades mounted on wooden slide carriages. It was used for gunnery purposes at Portsmouth from 1866 and eventually removed from the Navy List in 1874.
